Tuning to Radio Caroline on Digital Satellite TV

Radio Caroline is now available on the Eurobird TV satellite, as well as the Internet broadcasts. The Eurobird TV satellite is co-located with the Astra satellite at 28-degrees (the Sky slot for the UK).

  1. If you have a standard Sky Digibox, just select channel 0199. Click here for more info.
  2. If you have a different satellite sytem using the 28-deg Astra and Eurobird satellites (Sky), click here.
  3. If you have a satellite sytem using the 19.2-deg Astra satellites (eg. Germany, Austria, Poland), click here.

Satellite System Background Information

The satellite receiving system consists of a dish, which is fitted with a gadget that collects the signal from the dish (the thing on the bracket with a cable to it) which is called an 'LNB'. A cable then takes the signal to the Digital Satellite Receiver (or 'Digibox' as Sky like to call it). From the receiver a cable goes to the TV (either aerial socket or SCART), but most receivers have also got Audio Outputs, which can be connected to the Aux inputs of your Hi-Fi.

First, a word of caution. Dish installation can be a difficult and dangerous business. It's easy to wreck the whole system, and possibly wreck yourself! We want to keep all our listeners! If you're not sure that you can do the job, employ a professional satellite installer. Print out this page to show him what you want.

OK, to tune in, the first thing you need is a dish pointing at 28 degrees. If you have an existing 19.2-degrees digital system, and want to add Radio Caroline, then this could be done with a second dish, or it's possible to fit an extender arm that takes two LNB's, which makes your existing dish look in two directions at once.

The next problem is to connect two LNB's to one receiver. Simple manual switches are available, but for convenience, a better solution is a remote-controlled switch (known as a DISEqC switch) which can be mounted near the LNB's, needing only one long cable run. Most receivers will automatically control a DISEqC switch. The DISEqC switch is only slightly more expensive than a manual switch.

Any good independent satellite TV supplier will sell you any accessories you need. As we said, print this page out and show him what you want.

Satellite News

Radio Caroline is now available on 2 satellites.

  1. For listeners in Britain and Europe:- The frequency on the Eurobird (Sky) satellite at 28 degrees has recently changed, see below.

Eurobird 28-deg.East (Sky)

Radio Caroline broadcasts on the Eurobird satellite at 28 degrees East, the same satellite slot that broadcasts Sky services to the UK. Note that you WILL NOT have to sign up as a subscriber to any service, in order to receive this Radio Caroline broadcast.

Radio Caroline has recently changed frequency to ensure coverage for most of Europe. These are the new details (updated 12th June 2006). Click Here if you have a standard Sky Digibox

The tuning information for Eurobird (Sky) is :-

  1. Frequency 11389 MHz.
  2. Polarisation Vertical
  3. Symbol Rate 27500 (or 27.5)
  4. FEC 2/3

Astra 19.2-deg.East

Unfortunately, Radio Caroline is not currently available on the Astra satellite at 19.2 degrees East, the same satellite slot that broadcasts to most of Central Europe. It is hoped that we will be able to restore this service in the future, but meanwhile we suggest our listeners in Europe should point their dish at 28.5 degrees, or use the Internet feeds.

Tuning your Satellite Receiver

If you have a Sky Digibox, Click Here, otherwise read on. . .

Tuning your receiver in to Radio Caroline is quite easy. There will be a handbook with the set, and a remote control, and you may need these. We can't give detailed instructions here for all the possible receivers, but with most receivers, the System Setup or Installation menu will have an option for Automatic Programme Search. Once a search is completed, you should find 'Caroline' in the list of radio channels found. Then add Radio Caroline to your list of favourite channels.
If you have two dishes or two LNB's, the System Setup or Installation menu should also have an option for Aerial Selection (sometimes called Antenna Selection). Automatic Programme Search may need to be performed on each Aerial separately.

If your 'System Setup' allows, you may find it easier to tune in manually. The parameters you need are:-

Eurobird 28-degrees
Frequency 11389 MHz. (or 11.389)
Polarisation Vertical
Symbol Rate 27500 (or 27.5)
FEC 2/3
Some receivers may also need these parameters (these are subject to change):-
Audio PID (APID) 2312
Service ID (SID) 53550

Enter these details. Now highlight 'find channels', press 'select' and a page of stations should appear, including Radio Caroline. Again, you can move Radio Caroline into your list of favourite channels.

Radio Caroline now appears in the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) as channel 0199

Please Note that the frequency (eg. 11389 MHz, or 11.389 GHz) is approximate, some receivers may find the signal at 11388 or 11390. Don't Panic, it's OK!

If you are still having problems, look at the Troubleshooting section.

Troubleshooting

Some listeners have experienced problems when re-tuning, after the recent change of frequency. Because of the many varieties of receiver that are out there, we cannot give a definitive answer if you have a problem. But here are some of the solutions we have heard about.

  1. Error Message There Is A Technical Fault
You may get this message if you have re-tuned your receiver from an old frequency. This occurs when you selected the obsolete settings for Radio Caroline.
Please remember, if you have re-tuned your receiver, when you look for Radio Caroline by going to [SERVICES], [OTHER CHANNELS], that you may find two settings, and you have to use the new setting.
There should be an option at the bottom of the [SERVICES], [OTHER CHANNELS] page to allow you to delete an unwanted setting. The current frequency for Radio Caroline is '11.389'.

  2. Error Message No Signal Found
Some listeners (with older receivers) have found that they get this message after they had asked the receiver to [FIND CHANNELS] (Step 6-7 above). The solution was to unplug the receiver from the power socket for a couple of minutes, then re-connect, and start again.

  3. Some brands of receiver (notably the Nokia 9450) will not find a channel with new parameters, if it already has one stored with the same name. So, if the station has changed frequency (as Radio Caroline did recently) then you must delete the old settings first, then enter the new settings and ask the receiver to [Find Channels].

If you have any problems tuning in, then call Dell on 01933-626945 ( (+44)-1933-626945 outside the UK.)

If you find a solution to a problem, please let us know and we will share the knowledge.
